Infrared spectroscopy allows the identification of compounds or functional groups containing covalent bonds. This technique is based on the excitation of vibrational energy levels of molecules (vibrational normal modes). The resonant frequencies or vibrational frequencies are related to the strength of the bond, and the mass of the atoms on either side of it. Thus, the vibration frequencies can be associated with a particular type of link. The complex molecules, with lots of links, have vibration conjugate, leading to infrared absorptions at characteristic frequencies that may be related to chemical functional groups. The main applications of this spectroscopy related to the study of materials for energy are, first identification of organic and polymeric substances. It also allows the identification and distinction of inorganic groups.


This instrument sets the standard for photometric noise, range and linearity, providing excellent resolution across the UV-Visible spectrum extending the wavelength range into the NIR to 3300 nm. This equipment can determine the energy of transitions between the ground state energy and excited factors allowing deduction of covalency of metal-ligand bonds. It also can detect the charge transfer bands ligand-metal and metal-ligand and the characteristic bands of the Jahn-Teller effect displayed in the frequency region of the spectrometer.
UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy is commonly used in the quantitative determination of transition metal ions in the solid state and in solution and conjugated organic compounds. In the area of materials for energy is of great interest because it means this will be possible to detect electronic changes of the ions involved in the electrochemical reactions, whether organic or inorganic materials.
