CIC energiGUNE's seminar "Diverse Polymer Architectures towards Solvent-Free Polymer Electrolytes in Batteries”

For future battery applications, solid state polymer electrolytes are highly recommended due to their clear advantages in processing, lamination and lightweight in addition to high mechanical strength and ionic conductivity. Our strategy aims at suppression of crystallization of PEO using bottle brush polymer architecture in which PEO is attached to various kinds of backbones such as polynorbornene, polyethenesulfonate, polymethacrylate etc. We also developed solid polymer electrolytes incorporating mechanically stable phases and efficient Li-ion conducting phases in a single component system obtained from brush block copolymers. All the polymers were mixed with different amounts of LiTFSI salts and the ionic conductivity, Li-transfer number and electrochemical stability of these solvent-free solid polymer electrolytes were determined using impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. We could achieve 105 Pa shear modulus at 60°C for such a brush block copolymer exhibiting ionic conductivity between 10-3 and 10-4 S/cm over a temperature range of 80 to 30°C.
