William Manalastas received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from De La Salle University - Manila, Philippines. For his bachelor's thesis, he studied Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational modeling for cluster systems during a one-year stint at Kasai Lab-Osaka University (Japan) under a JASSO student-exchange scholarship.

As an Erasmus Mundus Masters scholar, William pursued experimental electrochemistry training under the European Masters program in Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (MESC), handled by the pedagogic arm of Europe's main coalition of electrochemistry labs - ALISTORE.  After spending semesters in Toulouse (France), Warsaw (Poland) and Cordoba (Spain), his culminating internship project at Saint-Gobain CREE (France) focused on pilot-scale optimization of carbon powders for lithium-ion batteries (2012).

For the next 3 years, he devotes himself to the strategic design of Li-ion conducting oxides through the understanding of the Li-transport mechanisms in relation to bulk crystal, microstructure and process optimization effects.
