María Martínez obtained a degree in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country in 2010. She obtained a predoctoral grant from the Basque Government in 2011 and completed her PhD in Applied Chemistry and Polymeric Materials in December 2015 at the University of the Basque Country (San Sebastian, Spain), under the supervision of Professors Mariló Gurruchaga and Isabel Goñi. Meanwhile, she did a stay of six months at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials (USA) in 2014 under the supervision of Professor Joachim Kohn.

Her thesis work was focused on the synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials made from hybrid organic-inorganic precursors and natural polymers for their use as coatings for metallic implants. After her PhD, María went on researching in Polymat research group at University of the Basque Country with a temporary contract for recent doctors focused on the development of polymeric materials for biomedical applications.

Since February 2017 she is a Postdoctoral Researcher at CIC EnergiGUNE, where she joined the Solid Electrolyte Group.
