Dr. Jon Ajuria completed his bachelor degree in Chemistry in 2003 in the University of the Basque Country. During the last year he carried out his bachelor thesis in the University of Bergen, Norway. This research project consisted in the separation and quantification of the acids present in various crude oil samples of different origin, which were believed to be natural inhibitors of the hydrates that clogged the pipelines.

Back to the Basque Country, he joined the Energy Department of IK-4 CIDETEC where he dedicated 3 years of intense research activity in Hydrogen Fuel Cells. During those years, his research evolved from lab scale, focused on the development of new electrodes and Membrane Electrode Assembly systems for efficient single fuel cells, to the assembly and electrical characterization of up to 1 Kilowatt fuel cell stacks on the search of industrial applications.

Motivated by the challenge of a doctoral thesis, he moved to IK-4 IKERLAN in 2007 where he obtained his PhD degree in 2012 by the University of the Basque Country. Research carried during this period of time was devoted to the development of hybrid organic-inorganic flexible solar cells based on nanostructured electrodes. In the frame of his PhD he visited Dr.Oliver Hayden´s group at SIEMENS (Germany) for a 4 month internship where he worked on the development of organic photodetectors sensitized in the Near Infrared by the addition of colloidal quantum dots.

After his PhD, he stayed for 3 years at IK-4 IKERLAN as a researcher where he participated in several European Projects, where his research was mainly focused on the development of organic solar cells based on inorganic electrodes and new generation low band gap materials together with the fabrication of tandem cells. Since 2013 he is associate editor of Translational Material Science.
