The jury particularly highlighted its multicultural and diverse character, with a team of around 200 people from 27 nationalities and a female representation close to 48%, as well as its contribution to the Basque energy R&D&I ecosystem.

CIC energiGUNE –a Basque research center specialized in electrochemical and thermal energy storage and conversion– has been awarded in the fourth edition of the Arizmendiarrieta-Anitua Awards 2026, a recognition that distinguishes companies and organizations in the territory of Álava that integrate the values of the Inclusive and Participatory Company Model (MIPE) into their management.

The Arizmendiarrieta Kristau Fundazioa, a non-profit organization linked to the Mondragón Cooperative Experience and to the promotion of a people-centered economy, has granted this award to CIC energiGUNE together with Sarkis Lagunketa and Fundación Hazi, in recognition of their commitment to an open, diverse organization based on shared responsibility in decision-making.

The jury highlighted that CIC energiGUNE has a team of around 200 people from 27 nationalities across five continents, reflecting its multicultural character and openness to professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds. In addition, the jury valued that 48% of the workforce is made up of women, as well as the way in which the center promotes the active participation of employees in decision-making processes and in its day-to-day management.

The award also recognizes the scientific excellence of CIC energiGUNE in the field of electrochemical and thermal energy storage, as well as its collaborative model with universities, research centers and companies at different levels. The organization has developed research projects that combine scientific rigor with industrial application, strengthening its position as a relevant player within the European R&D&I ecosystem.

The Arizmendiarrieta-Anitua Awards are granted to organizations that embody the principles of cooperation, shared responsibility and participatory management inspired by the figure of José María Arizmendiarrieta, promoter of the Mondragón cooperative movement, and Pedro Anitua, founder of the Diocesan Schools of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The awards ceremony took place yesterday, Tuesday 17 March, at the Molinuevo Foundation Auditorium (Vitoria-Gasteiz), with the presence of representatives from the main institutions of the Historical Territory of Álava.

According to the center’s Director of Human Resources, Asier Urzelai, “this recognition is an incentive to continue strengthening an organizational model that combines scientific excellence, global openness, diversity and internal participation, aligned with values that place people at the center”.
