The CDTI report places the centre among the entities with the highest return in Mobility, within a context of strong national leadership.

CIC energiGUNE –a Basque research centre specialised in electrochemical and thermal energy storage and conversion– is listed among the reference centres identified based on the results observed in Horizon Europe, within a context of strong performance by Spain’s R&D&I system in the main European programme for research and innovation funding. This is reflected in the “Report on provisional results of Spain’s participation in Horizon Europe (2021–2024)”, prepared by the Centre for the Development of Technology and Innovation (CDTI).

During the first four years of Horizon Europe, Spanish entities have secured €4,507.6 million, representing a return rate of 11.4% within the EU-27. These results position Spain as the third country in terms of funding obtained, second in number of participations, and first in leadership of collaborative projects, with 686 coordinated projects, equivalent to 15.8% of the European total.

In terms of activity, 4,813 projects with Spanish participation have been funded, amounting to 11,227 participations. This level of presence reflects the strength of Spain’s scientific and technological system in European calls, in a highly competitive context where the programme’s average success rate is around 16%, compared to 19% achieved by Spanish entities.

Within this overall framework, CIC energiGUNE is highlighted in the report among the entities with the highest return in the field of Mobility, one of the areas with the highest funding volume and national leadership within Horizon Europe. Mobility is part of Cluster 5 (Climate, Energy and Mobility), one of the programme’s central pillars in relation to the energy transition and decarbonisation.

Overall, Cluster 5 has generated a return of €1,007.7 million for Spain, equivalent to more than 22% of the country’s total return in Horizon Europe, placing Spain among the top three countries in the European Union across all its areas. In Energy, the return reached €469.2 million (13.9% EU-27); in Mobility, €426.4 million (13.3% EU-27); and in Climate, €112.1 million (12.5% EU-27).

The Mobility area alone, in which CIC energiGUNE is explicitly mentioned among the leading entities, accounts for €426.4 million, equivalent to approximately 9.5% of Spain’s total return in Horizon Europe. It includes 323 funded activities, of which 75 have been coordinated by Spanish entities, demonstrating a high level of leadership in this field.

Likewise, the Energy area, closely aligned with CIC energiGUNE’s research lines, concentrates €469.2 million, representing just over 10% of the country’s total return, with 379 funded activities and 109 coordinations, consolidating itself as one of the main pillars of Spain’s participation in the programme.

The report also highlights that Pillar II of Horizon Europe –focused on global challenges and European industrial competitiveness– accounts for 68.6% of Spain’s return, with a total of €3,093 million. This pillar constitutes the main funding framework for projects related to the energy transition, sustainable mobility, industrial decarbonisation and climate resilience, all areas fully aligned with CIC energiGUNE’s research activity.

From an aggregated perspective, more than two out of every three euros secured by Spanish entities in Horizon Europe come from this pillar, underscoring the strategic relevance of centres specialised in energy and clean technologies within the European R&D&I ecosystem.

CIC energiGUNE’s contribution to these results is articulated through its participation in highly complex European consortia, in collaboration with universities, technological centres, companies and public bodies from different countries. This approach maximises the scientific and technological impact of projects and strengthens the connection between advanced research, technological development and industrial application.

The centre considers this positioning to be the result of the sustained work of its research teams, based on specialisation in energy storage and conversion, scientific excellence and alignment with European priorities. Participation in Horizon Europe also contributes to strengthening the international projection of research carried out in the Basque Country and its integration into the main European initiatives in the field of energy transition.
