Asier Agrelo-Lestón graduated in Chemistry in 2017 from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and obtained his master’s degree in Environmental Engineering in 2019 from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), where he began to develop an interest in photocatalysis. In June 2019, he joined the pharmaceutical company Almirall as a trainee in the Health, Safety and Environment department, supporting the team in their daily tasks.
In October 2020, he began his doctoral estudies at UPC within the Chemical Process Engineering program, as part of the NEMEN (Nanoengineering of Materials for Energy) research group, under the supervision of Dr. Jordi Llorca Piqué and Dr. Lluís Soler Turu. His thesis, titled "Development of Metal-Enhanced TiO₂-based Photocatalysts for Hydrogen Production", focused on the development of TiO₂-based catalysts with metal deposition for photocatalytic hydrogen production. During his PhD, he worked on both the synthesis and characterization of catalysts, using synthesis methodologies such as incipient wetness impregnation (IWI), ball milling, hydrothermal synthesis, and the sol-gel method. For the material characterization, he employed techniques including XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, among others. He also participated in several synchrotron beamtimes, where he worked with advanced characterization techniques such as XAS, XRD, and NAP-XPS under operando/in-situ conditions. In June 2025, he obtained his PhD in Chemical Process Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) with Cum Laude distinction.
In June 2025, he joined CIC energiGUNE as a researcher in the Thermocatalysis and Ionic Liquids research group, where he currently focuses on the design and synthesis of ionic liquid-based catalytic systems for the development of sustainable fuels.
