The Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has opened the draft of the Energy Storage Strategy for public consultation.

The Energy Storage Strategy is part of the set of actions aimed at achieving the objectives established in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2020 (PNIEC) and the Long-Term Decarbonisation Strategy.

The PNIEC requires specific strategies to correctly identify the challenges and opportunities and to design the most appropriate measures in key technologies and vectors for the achievement of the energy and climate objectives, as well as to take advantage of the opportunities for the generation of economic activity, employment and competitive industrial development that the energy transition may entail.

Along these lines, it has identified energy storage as one of the key tools to provide flexibility to the electricity system in order to support significant growth in renewable generation, as well as to contribute to the management of electricity networks, the participation of citizens in the change of the energy model and greater competition and integration in the electricity market.

The draft Energy Storage Strategy establishes 10 lines of action that are specified in 65 measures, aimed at promoting effective deployment of storage and thus boost the competitiveness of the national industry in its value chain.

The Strategy also identifies and analyses R+D+i, the strengthening of industry, the circular economy, the benefit for the electricity system in general and, in particular, in isolated areas and non-peninsular territories. In addition, it quantifies the potential storage needs on the way to the decarbonisation of the energy system.

In order to obtain comments and contributions to the final document, the draft (available in the section Related Documents) has been submitted for public consultation, and allegations can be submitted until November 9th through the following email: bzn-almacenamiento-ener@miteco.es.
