JUAN MIGUEL LOPEZ DEL AMO

Presentation

Dr. Juan Miguel Lopez del Amo completed his PhD at the Free University of Berlin (Germany) in 2006 under the supervision of Prof. Hans Heinrich Limbach and Prof. Gerd Buntkowsky. His thesis was dedicated to the development and applications of solid state NMR to the structural and physicochemical characterization of solid organic and organometallic compounds. His work was specially focused on the quantification and theoretical description of multiple kinetic isotope effects and quantum tunneling processes in hydrogen bonds. After his PhD. he joined the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP-Berlin, Germany) as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Bernd Reif, where he was involved in the development of proton detection-based solid state NMR experiments for the characterization of the structure and dynamics of perdeuterated microcrystalline proteins. During this time he also applied solid state NMR and solid state DNP NMR to the analysis of amyloid fibrils and their disaggregation processes. In 2011 he joined the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental health, Munich (Germany) to work in solid state NMR studies of the amyloid β-peptide directly involved in the Alzheimer´s disease. Since September 2012 Dr. Juan Miguel Lopez del Amo is head of the solid state NMR facility at the CIC energiGUNE. His research is focused on the characterization of new materials for advance energy storage applications including ceramic and polymer electrolytes, anodes and paramagnetic cathode materials.
