Scientists Elena Palomo and Stefania Doppiu will moderate two of the sessions of the Conference, which will be carried out virtually from Ljubljana (Slovenia) from the 9th of June until the 11th.

CIC energiGUNE, the Basque research center of reference in battery storage, thermal energy solutions and hydrogen, and member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance-BRTA, will be present in this year’s edition of Enerstock. The Scientific Manager of the thermal energy solutions area Elena Palomo and the group leader Stefania Doppiu will moderate two of the main sessions. Furthermore, researchers from the Basque center will offer 10 presentations about the latest research work done on new thermochemical materials and phase change materials.

“The presence of such a relevant number of scientists from CIC energiGUNE at Enerstock 2021 is a demonstration of the positioning reached by the center in the area of thermal storage, and places us as a consolidated European referent”, has assured doctor Elena Palomo, who will moderate one of the sessions dedicated to phase change materials. According to doctor Stefania Doppiu, who will carry out the same task in one of the sessions about thermochemical materials, “there is no doubt that CIC energiGUNE has reached a level of excellence in research that opens the door for us to participate having our own voice in this type of events”.

The conference, which is celebrated every two years, will be carried out from the 9th of June until the 11th with a virtual format from the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana and is funded by the ECES program (Energy Conservation through Energy Storage) of the International Energy Agency. The organization of the 2021 edition is in charge of the University of Ljubljana – Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the National Institute of Chemistry of Slovenia.

The program of Enerstock 2021 revolves around the latest scientific and technological achievements developed within the field of thermal storage, as well as the tendencies and future perspectives on storage, materials, applications and systems, without forgetting about broader aspects such as climate change, climate policies and other related disciplines. Apart from the plenary talks and guest presentations, the participants have the opportunity of presenting their work in different oral presentations and poster sessions, as is the case of the ten speakers from CIC energiGUNE that have been invited to do so.

In this case, the talks prepared from the Basque center will deal with two fundamental aspects. On the one hand, the new thermochemical materials for high-temperature thermal energy storage applications, and on the other hand, the new phase change materials for applications of thermal energy storage in the industry. In this last case, they will present the advances made by the center on plastic crystals that will experience phase transitions in a highly energetic solid state, as well as new porous support structures for solid-liquid phase change materials.

There will also be space for presenting the research carried out on anti-corrosion covers for thermal storage technologies based on molten salts and for technologies that are based on vapor.

From the point of view of the participation, it needs to be mentioned that at Enerstock 2021 the representatives taking part will be from 16 European countries and 8 other parts of the world, among which are Australia, Canada, China, Israel, India, Japan or the United States. As relevant research centers, apart from CIC energiGUNE, there are the German Aerospace Center, AEE Intec, ZAE Bayern, Fraunhofer Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ben Gurion University or Trinity College Dublin.
