The Basque center will organize the eighth edition of the International Symposium on Enhanced Electrochemical Capacitors (ISEECap 2024), one of the world´s leading events in the field of supercapacitor technology, in the capital of Alava from July 8 to 12.

CIC energiGUNE, the Basque research center of reference in electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage and conversion and hydrogen technologies, will bring together in Vitoria-Gasteiz more than 150 international experts in supercapacitors on the occasion of the 8th edition of ISEECap (International Symposium on Advanced Electrochemical Capacitors). This prestigious professional event, considered as one of the reference meetings in the field of supercapacitors worldwide, will be held between July 8 and 12 at the Europa Conference Center.

"Vitoria-Gasteiz is going to become during that week the center of supercapacitor technology, which is increasingly emerging as a real alternative to traditional batteries in those applications that require high power or fast charges, such as renewables, grid stability, or public transport," said Jon Ajuria, Chairman of the Symposium and Leader of the research line of metal ion capacitors in CIC energiGUNE. "One of the highlights of the congress is that we will be able to bring together researchers, industry representatives and also students in the same place, which guarantees a highly inspiring framework for development," he said.

In this sense, ISEECap 2024 -in addition to the usual program made up of plenary sessions, keynote lectures and presentations- will host as a novelty with respect to previous editions "an industrial session in memory of Dr. John Miller, which will culminate with a round table where the most relevant agents will give their vision of the real challenges faced by this technology when it comes to conquering the market," said Ajuria.

This industrial session includes the participation of a wide spectrum of business models, from startups to large industrial conglomerates, such as Nanomate from Phi4tech, E-Lyte Innovations GmbH, UP Catalyst, Delfort, BCARE -spinoff of CIC energiGUNE that will present its collaboration with Talgo- or YUNASKO. With the presence of these companies, ISEECap 2024 guarantees the participation of the entire capacitor value chain and offers access to the innovation ecosystem in one place.

As relevant speakers, ISEECap 2024 will count with the participation - among others - of Andrea Balducci, Professor of Applied Electrochemistry at the Institute of Technical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena; Katsuhiko Naoi, Professor Emeritus at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology; Thierry Brousse, Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Nantes; Yury Gogotsi, Professor and holder of the Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Chair in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University; Patrice Simon, Professor of Materials Science at Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier University; Francesca Soavi, Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in the "Giacomo Ciamician" Department of Chemistry at the University of Bologna; and Elzbieta Frackowiack, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Poznan.

On the other hand, prior to the start of the symposium on Monday July 8 from 14:00h with the plenary session, a "tutorial session" will be held. This session will be held at the Palacio Europa, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, and will allow attendees to learn the keys to a technology that is taking steps to assimilate batteries as an energy storage device.

The latest advances in research, which will be reported at the symposium, highlight the importance of increasing the energy density in supercapacitors to achieve this goal, since this aspect would allow to have high density and energy power in the same device. This achievement would have an impact not only on energy storage, but also on decisive aspects for its application in all fields, such as reducing charging time and increasing service life.
