The researcher has been recognized by the Basque Foundation for Science with the highest category after having been an Ikerbasque Research Associate for the last few years.

Montse Casas-Cabanas, scientific coordinator of the electrochemical area of CICenergiGUNE, the Basque research center of reference in electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage and conversion and hydrogen technologies, has been appointed Ikerbasque Research Professor by the Fundación Ikerbasque, an entity that promotes the development of scientific research in the Basque Country by attracting researchers of excellence.

The research work of Montse Casas-Cabanas, who for the last three years has been on the Ikerbasque lists in the Research Associate category, has been focused on the design of functional materials within energy storage, as well as the study of the phenomena that occur in them. Her background in solid state chemistry and crystallochemistry is especially remarkable, as well as her experience in different energy storage technologies.

In addition to being the scientific coordinator of the electrochemical area of CIC energiGUNE since 2020 and actively participating in the development of several projects that have contributed to the positioning of the Basque center as an international reference entity in energy, Dr. Casas-Cabanas is recognized for her contributions to the study of reaction mechanisms through operando experiments and the study of the impact of structural disorder and defects on electrochemical performance, for which she was a pioneer through the development of the FAULTS software, which is experiencing increasing use within the materials community.

In 2021 she was awarded by the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) with the "Young Researcher" award, in the "Group Leader" modality, and was selected as Technical Advisor of the "Advanced Materials and Manufacturing" Expert Group of the European Batteries Association (BEPA). She is currently Technical Leader of the "Emerging New Technologies" group in the Batteries Europe (BE) technology and innovation platform.

Also, Montse Casas-Cabanas has been Principal Investigator of several European projects and national plans and has participated in several projects linked to the business sector. In addition, she is the CIC energiGUNE coordinator for the Erasmus Mundus MESC+ master and CIC representative in the European network Alistore-ERI, which brings together 20 research centers and 12 companies in Europe around advanced research in energy storage and its transfer in the short and medium term to the continent´s industry.

With the recognition of Montse Casas Cabanas, there are now seven Ikerbasque scientists in CIC energiGUNE: Elena Palomo, Paramaconi Rodriguez, Daniel Carriazo and Javier Carrasaco (all in the Ikerbasque Research Professor category), as well as Eduardo José García Suarez and Nagore Ortiz (Ikerbasque Research Associate).
