The scientist, who is currently working on CIC energiGUNE´s polymer electrolyte research line, joins the group of researchers at the center recognized by the Basque Foundation for Science – Ikerbasque, which includes Montserrat Casas Cabanas, Elena Palomo Del Barrio, Daniel Carriazo, Javier Carrasco, Paramaconi Rodríguez, and Max García-Melchor as Ikerbasque Research Professors, and Heng Zhang, Nagore Ortiz, and Eduardo García Suárez as Ikerbasque Research Associate Professors.

Leire Meabe Iturbe, a researcher at CIC energiGUNE, a leading Basque research center in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, as well as thermal energy storage and conversion, has been recognized as an Ikerbasque Research Fellow by the Basque Foundation for Science - Ikerbasque, an entity promoted by the Basque Government to contribute to the development of scientific research by attracting talent and researchers of excellence. With this appointment, there are now 10 people from CIC energiGUNE who have received an Ikerbasque distinction, six of them in the Research Professor category, three in Research Associate Professor, and one in Research Fellow.

“Our commitment to talent is one of the strategic decisions that has enabled us to achieve a leading position in the field of energy, and this is something that is highlighted by awards such as this one,” said Asier Urzelai, Director of Human Resources at CIC energiGUNE. “Of course, the work of Ikerbasque is essential to maintaining this capacity for attraction and professional development, so we are very grateful for their ongoing support,” he said.

Leire Meabe Iturbe currently works as a senior researcher at CIC energiGUNE, in the Organic and Hybrid Materials group, focusing on the research line of polymeric electrolytes. In fact, her scientific career is closely linked to polymeric materials, polymer chemistry, and electrochemistry. In 2014, she obtained a degree in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country and, in 2015, a Master´s degree in Applied Chemistry and Polymeric Materials.

To complete her PhD, Leire Meabe was awarded an FPU grant from the Spanish Ministry, which she completed in 2019 at Polymat. During her studies, she completed two placements, one at Yamagata University (Japan) and the other at Deakin University (Australia), focusing her thesis on the development of polycarbonates for use in electrolytes. After completing her PhD, she joined CIC energiGUNE, where she has worked on various European and industrial projects developing materials for polymer electrolytes for batteries.

With the appointment of Leire Meabe Iturbe, there are now ten researchers at CIC energiGUNE who have been recognized by the Basque Foundation for Science – Ikerbasque. Six are in the Ikerbasque Research Professor category: Montserrat Casas Cabanas (Scientific Director of the Electrochemical Storage Area), Elena Palomo Del Barrio (Scientific Director of the Thermal Storage Area), Daniel Carriazo, Javier Carrasco, Paramaconi Rodríguez, and Max García-Melchor, and three others are in the Ikerbasque Research Associate Professors category: Heng Zhang, Nagore Ortiz, and Eduardo García Suárez.
