CIC energiGUNE, a leading Basque research center in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, as well as thermal energy storage and conversion, has doubled in just one year the number of scientists included in the “Ranking of the World Scientists,” published annually by Stanford University and the academic publisher Elsevier. From the five researchers listed in 2024 (Michel Armand, Elena Palomo, Montse Casas-Cabanas, Javier Carrasco, and Yaroslav Grosu), the number has grown to ten in this edition, including both those most cited in 2024 and those recognized in the General Ranking for their full career trajectory.
Professor Michel Armand, Honorary Scientific Director of CIC energiGUNE’s Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion Area, continues to lead the center’s list of distinguished researchers in this ranking. He is once again joined by Professor Elena Palomo, Scientific Director of the Thermal Energy Storage and Conversion Area at CIC energiGUNE and Ikerbasque Professor; Professor Montse Casas-Cabanas, Scientific Director of the Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion Area and Ikerbasque Research Professor; Dr. Yaroslav Grosu, Group Leader of Interfacial Phenomena and Porous Media and Ramón y Cajal Researcher; and Professor Javier Carrasco, Group Leader of Modeling and Computational Simulations at CIC energiGUNE.
Joining these five researchers this year are Professor Heng Zhang, Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor at CIC energiGUNE and Group Leader at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China); Professor Max García-Melchor, Ikerbasque Research Professor and Leader of the Atomistic and Molecular Modeling for Catalysis Group at CIC energiGUNE; Dr. Damien Saurel, Leader of the Inorganic Materials Reaction Mechanisms for Batteries Team at the Basque center; and Dr. Shanmukaraj Devaraj, Senior Researcher in the Organic Materials Group at CIC energiGUNE, who has been investigating polymer-based solid-state batteries since 2013.
In addition, Professor Daniel Carriazo, Ikerbasque Research Professor and Head of the Research Line on Electrolytes for Solid-State Batteries, appears in the General Ranking for his research career. Notably, this section also includes Michel Armand, Elena Palomo, and Javier Carrasco.
The “Ranking of the World Scientists,” released this month, contains information on the scientific activity carried out in 2024. The data in this publication—considered the main international benchmark in the scientific field—are compiled globally based on the impact of published research, referencing over 210,000 researchers. Various factors are taken into account, such as co-authorship and the percentage of self-citations, as well as a combined analysis of normalized parameters directly related to the impact of indexed scientific publications. The study provides an overview both of researchers’ historical professional careers and of their specific contributions during the most recent year analyzed.
