IÑIGO ORTEGA FERNANDEZ

Presentation

Dr. Iñigo Ortega is currently an Associate Engineer at the “Systems engineering & Technology transfer” group. His research activity if focused in the design, construction, testing and validation of prototypes at laboratory and pre-industrial scale for different thermal energy storage (TES) applications. In particular, his main expertise is related to the use of modelling tools such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software in the design of thermally-optimized TES systems and its validation versus experimental data. In 2019, he got an Ikermugikortasuna grant from the Basque Government to carry out a 3-months stay at the Fraunhofer Institute of Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) in Freiburg (Germany) under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Fluri. The topic of this stay was the modelling of transient systems using TRNSYS software. Previously, he developed his Ph.D entitled “High temperature packed bed thermal energy storage systems based on low cost materials” at CIC energiGUNE. During this period, he obtained a predoctoral grant from the Basque Government (2014) and, he carried out a stay of three months (2016) at the Scoula Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana (SUPSI) in Lugano (Switzerland) under the supervision of Prof. Maurizio Barbato. In July 2017, he obtained his PhD degree in Engineering from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). In the academic year 2012- 2013, he studied the “Master in Renewable Materials Engineering” in the Polytechnic School of San Sebastián (UPV/EHU). From 2010 to 2012, he worked at Tecnalia Research&Innovation (San Sebastián, Spain) in the “Energy and Environment Division”. His research activity here was focused on the development of new technologies for valorisation of different metal scraps, slags and wastes by pyrometallurgical processes. From 2005 to 2010 he studied Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering of Bilbao (UPV/EHU). During the last course, he undertook a scholarship in AZTI-Tecnalia where he carried out his final career project developing a new plant for the valorisation of food and agricultural wastes by anaerobic digestion.
