LEIRE CAIZAN JUANARENA

Presentation

Leire Caizán did her Bachelor studies of Biotechnology at the University of Lleida (Spain), where she got the degree in 2012. She entered the Erasmus Programme and finished her last year at the he University of Helsinki (Finland). As her interest on green technologies and sustainable processes increased, she got thereafter accepted to the master program of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Wageningen, under the specialization of Environmental Engineering. Her Master thesis was about wood degradation with fungi for sustainable heat production, which she did at the department of Environmental Technology (ETE). She got her degree in 2014. Right after, Leire started her PhD research at the same department on the field of Microbial Fuel Cells, where she mainly focused on the study of granular activated carbon for bioanodes, i.e. the combination of porous electrodes (non-faradaic process) and electroactive bacteria (faradaic process). The ultimate goal of this technology was both the production and storage of electricity from a wastewater treatment process. She obtained her degree in June 2019. During her PhD, Leire acquired knowledge on electrochemical techniques (DC/AC), microscopy techniques (e.g. SEM, CLSM, EDX) and other analytical techniques such as GC, ICP or MRI. She supervised a total of 5 MSc students and 1 BSc student, and she also assisted BSc courses on peer-reviewing sessions and report writing. She had the opportunity to present her work at some international conferences, such as the IWA-YWP (2017) or EU-ISMET (2018), and she was committee member of the 5th PhD Symposium held in Wageningen (2018). Now, at CIC energiGUNE, Leire is looking forward to apply her acquired experience within the Post-mortem research group as well as to learn new skills in the exciting world of batteries and supercapacitors.
